Progress is nonlinear
This is a perishable skill. To be truly competent, proficient, and to understand what good really looks like, it takes work. A lot of work. This is not a rise to the occasion skill and never will be. If you're not pressure testing your skill set either by competing or taking classes, then you have no skill set under pressure regardless of context.
My goals and reasons for competing may not be yours. That's okay. You don't have to be the best, the fastest, the most accurate, etc, but you have to know what your current capabilities are and where to put in work to improve deficiencies. Progress is nonlinear. There will be great days, good days, bad days, frustrating days, and days you want to quit. Keep showing up.
If you stay focused and consistent, your skill set will grow past what you ever thought possible. And for whatever context you prioritize, a proficient skill set is a good thing.
