Learning to shoot with urgency and accuracy at 25, 30, 40 or even 50 yards is a great way to enhance your pistol fundamentals. Shooting at farther distances will expose deficiencies in your stance, grip and vision that may not be as obvious at closer distances. You’ll gain a better understanding of holds at different distances. And being able to hit targets at longer distances can make closer targets feel much easier.
Though statistically most self-defense scenarios happen within 3-10 yards, this statistic is not guaranteed. Self-defense scenarios can and do unfold in grocery stores, big box stores, parking lots, churches and hospitals. The skill to shoot longer distances is not a skill you’ll manifest under pressure.
Distance shooting should not be synonymous with slow fire. You’ll get lots of reps shooting aggressively offhand for practical purposes. Drills are designed to get you shooting sooner by understanding the visual cues you need to see.
